News & Giving

Roslyn Salt Cave has adopted a small Orphanage in South Africa.

Meet this beautiful Angel Mama Caroline Maphosa
Founder of The Chiedza Foster Home

For Christmas, Roslyn Salt Cave, along with Doctor Imara Dissanayake, who went to South Africa and discovered Caroline, donated a new washing machine, which was sorely needed, 22 backpacks and a Christmas lunch that included roast chicken, fruit, Mac and cheese, and a few other treats.

We are raising money for school supplies, school uniforms, and a scholarship fund to send the oldest of these beautiful children to college. It is so meaningful to see the children, and have a personal relationship with them. Every penny goes directly to the Chiezda Foster Home.

Giving is the formula for a blessed life.

If you would like to donate, please do so at the link below, or at the salt cave.

Questions for Carolyn:

What does Chiedza mean?

“Chiedza translated means light. Let there be light in every child who has been neglected”.

What inspired you?

“I volunteered in my community and could not believe how many children were abandoned at the side of the street and left at bus stops with nothing, no food, very little clothing and abused.

I have a seed in my heart to be the mother to the motherless!”

How many children do you have at Chiezda?

“I have 22 children plus 4 of my own. I love all of these children as mine.”

What is your vision?

My dream is to create a larger children's home, a place where even more children can find refuge from the storms of life. The need is great, and every child deserves a chance at a better future.”

How can we help?

“Their life goal is to get an education. They have nothing, they need school bags, school uniforms and backpacks. I have very little funds, but I make what I have go a long way, I feed the children maize meal for every meal. They don’t ever have fruit or protein. They sleep on the floor, But they are safe and loved here. “

Read Coroline’s Story

My name is Caroline Maphosa, and I was born in Zimbabwe on January 30, 1971, into a family of six. Today, I am happily married and blessed with four children—two boys and two girls, along with four beloved grandchildren. My educational journey began in Zimbabwe, and I am proud to call myself a Zimbabwean by birth. In September 1996, I embarked on a new chapter in my life when I came to South Africa.

In 2001, my path led me to join an organization where I volunteered as a caregiver. This organization was dedicated to supporting HIV/AIDS orphans and vulnerable children. During those years, antiretroviral medications (ARV's) were not as accessible as they are today. I vividly recall taking members of my community to hospices, ensuring they received the help they desperately needed, often leaving their children behind. It was in those moments that I would open my heart and my home to these children, providing them with a safe haven until their parents could return. Unfortunately, some parents never did, and it was then that I began my journey with Sparrow Children's Home.

My passion for caring for others led me to study to become a care worker. Over the years, I've had the privilege of working in various children's homes, hospices, and old-age homes, learning and growing in my capacity to provide care and support.

In June 2012, I made the decision to open a Day Care center, aiming to gather more information about children's homes. Then, in August 2014, a heart-wrenching incident occurred—a parent left her 6-week-old baby girl with me as she headed to work, promising to return. She never did. This marked a turning point in my life as I reported the case to the police and officially began my journey as a foster parent and social worker.

From that moment on, premature and abused children found their way to me. They were discovered abandoned on the side of the road or left at bus stops, their innocent lives shattered by neglect and cruelty. My mission became crystal clear: to provide a loving and nurturing environment for these precious children.

The community I serve faces numerous challenges. Many are underprivileged, struggling with unemployment, drug addiction, teenage pregnancies, and alcoholism. The children born into these circumstances often find themselves unwanted, unloved, and in danger. They need a safe haven where they can be protected, nurtured, and cared for with love.

At present, my home is a sanctuary for these children. It's a modest 7-roomed house, but within its walls, the children are safe, welcomed, and loved.

My dream is to create a larger children's home, a place where even more children can find refuge from the storms of life. The need is great, and every child deserves a chance at a better future.

Thank you for taking the time to learn about my journey and the work we do here at Chiedza Foster Home. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of these remarkable children.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Caroline Maphosa
